The Shakertown Stakes at Keeneland’s Bluegrass Stakes Day

The Shakertown Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in mid-April at Keeneland Race Course.  Raced on turf over a sprint distance of 5.5 furlongs, it is open to horses three years of age and older.  A Grade III race since 2003, it currently offers a purse of $100,000.  The race was named in 1997 in honor of Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill.

Come and see how the frontier was won at the birthplace of Kentucky--where the first permanent settlement was started on June 16, 1774.  Called “Harrodstown” for the first few years, pioneers constructed a sturdy fort on the hill in 1775.  This 18th century re-enactment is the fort’s signature event of the year.  Presentations, settlers, natives, sutlers and battles will take place for two short days in the warm June sun--just like it did nearly 240 years ago

The last weeks of September and the first weeks of October, 1862, saw a frenzy of activity along the turnpike through Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, as Confederate troops repeatedly marched through.  Catch a glimpse of how the Civil War impacted this Shaker community and those who lived here 150 years ago.  Listen to the Pleasant Hill Singers perform Music of the Black Shakers; experience dramatic presentations of Sister Patsy Roberts Williamson, as she describes her life as an African American Shaker, and Sister Mary Settles, the last on of the Pleasant Hill Shakers; and much more!  Complete schedule of activities available online soon.
